The Ensemble
hornroh modern alphorn quartet has prided itself on cultivating, disseminating and above all developing alphorn music for more than 15 years. Along the way the ensemble has never shied away from hard work, continuing to present the instrument in new contexts with its own productions or in collaboration with other artists.
The most recent creation of this kind is Georg Friedrich Haas’s concerto grosso Nr. 1 for 4 alphorns and orchestra, written for Hornroh and premiered and performed with the Bavarian Radio, ORF Vienna Radio and Southwest German Radio Symphony Orchestras, as well as the Tonhalle Orchestra Zürich. In March 2017 Hornroh gave the US premiere of the work with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Next performance in summer 2018 will take place at the London Royal Albert Hall with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra for BBC Proms.
Being part of this great production has strengthened Hornroh’s resolve to continue to contrast works by contemporary composers with traditional alphorn music in its own programmes.
